La neuvième édition de la biennale Danse l'Afrique danse! se tient à Johannesburg du 28 septembre au 7 octobre 2012 dans le cadre des Saisons France-Afrique du Sud 2012&2013. Danse l'Afrique danse! est un festival pan-africain ; un lieu de rencontre essentiel pour découvrir les dernières tendances de la scène chorégraphique du continent. Cette année, Danse l'Afrique danse! rend hommage aux artistes qui ont fait son histoire, tout en offrant à de jeunes chorégraphes l'opportunité de montrer leur travail à des artistes plus confirmés.

"Une Rupture" par Fana Tshabalala

Le jeune et talentueux chorégraphe et danseur Fana Tshabalala, qui a construit une relation artistique très forte avec la France et plus particulièrement avec le chorégraphe Michel Kelemenis, présente son solo "Une Rupture", à travers une tournée dans tout le réseau culturel français d'Afrique australe. Dans ce travail, Tshabalala veut faire passer le message selon lequel "ce n'est pas ce que nous voyons à l’œil nu qui définit le contenu et le contexte de la structure ; d'habitude, ce que nous voyons a plutôt tendance à nous camoufler la réalité. La réalité ne surgit que lorsque l'oeil, le coeur et l'esprit parviennent à tomber d'accord... Mon corps et mon âme vont raconter une histoire dont ma rationalité et mes yeux vont refuser/limiter la pensée et la vue. Une autre personne va alors tenter le voyage à travers la réalité de cette structure mal évaluée, la structure de moi, de vous, de nous et d'eux." La première de ce solo "Une Rupture" s'est tenue lors du New Dance festival en septembre 2011.

Mixing it Up : a new Hip Hop dance theatre festival featuring Duo Clash 66

A EUNIC project - When: 7 & 8 March @ University of Johannesburg Arts Centre and 10 & 11 March @ Artscape Theatre, Cape Town - Admission: R50. Bookings at Computicket.

Mixing it up is a new South African hip hop dance theatre festival which aims to showcase the best of South African dance crews. The festival will give South African audiences the opportunity to experience leading edge hip hop dance theatre with a uniquely South African flavour featuring dance crews such as Immortal Style from Cape Town and performers from JHB (tbc). In addition to the dance performances, we will see the inclusion of well-known South African rappers and DJ’s.

"Opera for Fools" by Vincent Mantsoe

The backdrop for "Opera for Fools" depicts the Shebeen lifestyle that was lived in the South African townships of Johannesburg, where it framed the centre stage for some of the dramatic events that took place between the 1970s and 1990s.

In the so-called ‘informal settlements’ of Soweto, Sophiatown and Alexandra, migrants from far and nearby neighbouring countries made new friends, all sharing the one common goal ‘to find that mighty gold and diamonds’ in the belly of the earth. In these townships, the vacuum was a recipe for crime to some, a political weapon to others. The nights would be silenced by gunfire or tsotsi raiding the dark streets like a black cat seeking its prey. Black cars with tinted windows would be either spying on individual houses or taking young ones who had been left in the streets without any care.

This work features music Deconstruction by Andrea Cera, with dancers from South Africa, France/La Réunion/Martinique. Produced by Association Noa-Cie Vincent Mantsoe, DRAC Auvergne France, with help from Conseil Regional Auvergne and Conseil General Department de l’Allier France. Beneath the colour… beneath religion… beneath culture… are we the person we are because or of spite of? This multi-media work is a search for self and a struggle against confinement. It interrogates the unravelling/unpacking of self. How much of us is imposed by culture, communities, religion, public views and opinions? Are we fearful of change… to disappoint or be rejected… do we question enough? Who are we… me and you… Who is beneath our skin??

South African choreographer and dancer Desire Davids collaborated with French photographer Pascale Beroujon to incorporate a multi-media dimension to her work. Parallelly to Desire Davids’ performance, Pascale Beroujon will lead a workshop around the theme of photography, dance and the body in motion. This workshop will gather students and young professionals in Johannesburg on Wednesday 29 February.
